Craig Harvey
Craig was born and raised in Orange and attended Orange Public School and Orange High School before pursuing an apprenticeship as a mechanic at HA Thomas and Sons. In 2010, Craig and his wife Diane established Craig Harvey Mechanical Repairs, taking over the business from Craig’s father Greg. The business has grown significantly since then and Craig has been able to employ two additional staff on a full-time basis.
Craig and Diane have two daughters, Caitlyn and Samantha, who are both heavily involved in netball and basketball. Craig is always a supportive father cheering on his daughters and their teammates from the sidelines or even playing alongside his daughters in mixed netball and touch football competitions. Craig is also a passionate basketball coach and is the current U18 boys coach for Orange Basketball. He played an integral role in establishing the Western Women’s Regional league - a senior representative basketball competition providing a platform for women in the central west to play competitive basketball. Craig had the privilege of coaching both his daughters and his niece last year in the third season of this competition.
Craig is a former President of Orange District Basketball Association. He is also a director of the Orange Eight Day Games and has been involved with the organisation for 27 out of the 47-year long history the organisation has in Orange. Craig spent six years working with the Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS) as a netball squad manager and basketball squad assistant coach. He was awarded the WRAS Volunteer of the Year award in 2017.
In 2017, Craig and his best mate decided they wanted to trek Kokoda. They started hiking along many of the amazing tracks around Orange and the Central West and also ventured to the Blue Mountains to take their training to the next level. Craig completed the Kokoda Trail in 2019 alongside his younger brother and some of his closest friends. In 2021, Craig and Diane trekked Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. In the following three years Craig completed the Larapinta Trail, Kokoda Trail and Mount Kilimanjaro alongside his eldest daughter. In 2023, Craig also completed his trek leader training and over ANZAC Day 2024 he led his first solo group over the Kokoda trail. Craig has now completed four crossings of the Kokoda trail and thoroughly enjoys sharing the history with people and watching the personal growth people encounter through their time on the track.
From these experiences, Craig has developed an innate appreciation for all that nature has to offer, in particular, Mount Canobolas. He believes that Mount Canobolas has potential to bring tourism to our region as well as providing opportunities for people to experience and enjoy the unique natural habitat of the area. A great example of this is the Lonely Mountain Ultra event which has grown significantly over the two years since it began. Craig is a proud sponsor of the event and enjoys having a crack at the 22km course.
An avid sports fan, Craig believes any opportunity for our youth to be able to participate in sport is extremely important. He believes sports provide valuable life lessons and tools for our younger generation to excel later in life. For this reason, he is very supportive of any proposed sporting opportunities for Orange.
